ECOSER 2.0 aimed to assess how marine protected areas (MPAs) contribute to human-well being. In order to achieve its objectives, the project developed several actions to analyse the links between ecological, social and institutional components present in MPAs, which made it possible to identify how the processes in which ecosystem services take part develop in an integrated way.
The project answered questions such as how the services are provided by the species present in these areas, how they are provided to direct and indirect beneficiaries and how they are managed by public institutions. With this data, it was possible to identify the environmental (species abundance), economic (yield), social (employment) and institutional (management systems) factors that determine the degree of effectiveness of MPAs, with a special emphasis on the effects of climate change and marine pollution.
