A consortium formed by 15 institutions from seven countries will investigate new solutions to minimise the waste generated by fishing gears, and the impacts that they are causing in marine life and habitats. Until 2025, the NETTAG+ team will develop new technologies to reduce the loss of fishing gear, facilitating its recovery through acoustic location systems, and promoting better waste management practices through awareness actions organized by fishermen’s associations, with the objective of preventing, reducing and mitigating these impacts.
The EqualSea Lab is contributing to Work Package 2 (WP2) PREVENT: Fishers as Guardians and Cleaners of the Ocean. We are leading activities in Croatia, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Galicia, which include working with Port Authorities to assess and evaluate litter management programs and facilities at ports, and working with small-scale fishers to pilot a fishers reward program promoting their role as cleaners of the ocean.
