The human population and the demand for ecosystem services (ES) in Spain are growing steadily, particularly in the protected coastal areas (Red Natura 2000) of the Rías Baixas. This area is very relevant from the point of view of marine biodiversity management and conservation. According to the latest WWF report, it identifies the RN2000 areas of Galicia as “seriously deficient”. These areas contain a great diversity of ecosystems with some of the most valuable natural habitats in Europe.
ECOSOCIEDAD aims to contribute to the optimisation of the use of the ecosystem services associated with RN 2000 areas and to the conservation of marine resources through a social participation project that makes it possible to establish the degree of knowledge available to society, in terms of natural capital and ES, their information needs and how they could take part in processes that are decisive for conservation.
